A Stroll Along the Canal

Well, more than a stroll - a 13 mile walk!

We decided to stick 2 fingers up to the horrendous Bank Holiday weather, throw on our waterproofs, pack up a picnic and walk to Bridgwater along the canal.

As canals go it's fairly short (14 miles) but that's long enough to spend a day walking and then get the train back (or you can cycle there and back). Our house is about 5 mins walk from the canal so it is perfect for a day trip because we don't have to drive anywhere, worry about traffic and parking etc.

We set off about 11.30am and got to Bridgwater just after 5. By the time we got the train home it was 6 by the time we got back so it was a long day! But after a nice hot shower we headed out to my lovely friend's house where she had laid on a feast of party food and we played on the Wii. Good times!

There were a few geocaches along the route so we managed to add another 5 finds to our collection :)

I took some photos which do I better job of describing the place than I could!

At the beginning of the walk. Lots of algae on the canal.

I dream of living in one of those town houses one day

Lots of little canal boats

And beautiful summer houses for quiet moments

Old bridges with thatched cottages

WW2 pill boxes like this one..

...and this one, which had a geocache on it!

Friendly cows

And the Somerset Space Walk - following the solar system from the Sun right along to Pluto, all the planets set out to scale along the canal.

Some swans - the photo on the left was taken back in May, and we wondered if the swans (right) we saw yesterday are the same little family
It was a perfect way to spend the Bank Holiday, despite the weather. We are so lucky to have this on our doorstep. I miss the seaside I grew up next to, but this is a more than welcome alternative.

What did you get up to this weekend?

  1. That looks lovely. I love the pill boxes too and always notice them if we are driving around and see some.
